Where Does India Stand In Developing Drone Technology Amid Global Race?

Drone Technology battery in Amid Global Race

Drones can be notable devisors in employment creation. The drone industry is one of the fastest-growing and has potential benefits in different sectors, such as healthcare, agriculture, defence, etc. India is fourth in drone technology and has more than 200 drone start-ups. The battery is one of the crucial components of drone technology. Li-ion battery for drones is in demand because of higher energy density, longer lifespan, and improved cost-effectiveness. This blog will explore drone technology and its development status in India.

Drone Technology and India

A drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle that depends on software or remote commands from the pilot for autonomous flight. Based on the weight, drones are classified as:-

Nano Drone: These drones carry a weight of equal to or less than 250 grams

Micro Drone: greater than 250 grams and less than or equal to 2 kilograms

Small Drone: Can have weight greater than 2 Kgs and less than or equal to 25 Kgs

Medium Drone: Greater than 25 Kgs and less than or equal to 150 Kgs

Large Drone: Greater than 150 Kg

Significance of Drone Technology

Currently, drones provide economic and commercial viability to countries. Due to its easy availability, drones are making a lot of commercial sense to industries. Over time, this technology will only evolve. Its use in different industries makes it significant in existing times:-

Defence: They are used as symmetric weapons for terror attacks. They can also be integrated into the national airspace system.

Healthcare: Drones can help revolutionize the healthcare industry in emergency times. For instance, the Telangana government used drone technology for medicine delivery to ensure healthcare equity in rural areas.

Agriculture: Micronutrients and pesticides can be spread through drones. Furthermore, soil monitoring can be achieved that will enhance productivity.

Initiatives to Promote Drone Technology in India

Liberalised Drone Rules, 2021

These rules are meant to provide the regulatory framework for the commercial use of drones. Some of the paramount observations under these rules are as follows:-

  • The fee required for drone operation has been reduced, and ease of compliance has also been given.
  • Research and development bodies have been facilitated with blanket exemptions from all permissions.
  • Foreign companies registered in India are also freed from restrictions.

Drone Response and Outreach in North East (i-Drone) Initiative

It eases the vaccine delivery to rigid and remote Indian terrains. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, i-DRONE was used first by the ICMR for vaccine distribution in rough terrain areas.

Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Drone

The main purpose of this scheme is to propel drone manufacturing in India with a focus on making indigenous industries globally competitive. Under this scheme, support will be provided to companies reneged in manufacturing drones and associated components. Furthermore, the PLI scheme for drones is expected to generate an investment of over Rs. 5,000.

Drone Import Policy

The Indian government has forbidden the import of drones except for defence, R&D, and security purposes. The objective of this policy is to uplift the manufacturing of domestic drones.

Make in India

The Make in India initiative will support the domestic players by facilitating them with robust policies and regulations to enhance the manufactured products in India.

NAMO Drone Didi Scheme

To make drone technology gender-equal, inclusive, and accessible, the NAMO Drone Didi scheme was launched. Under this initiative, 15,000 women's self-help groups will be given drones for agricultural purposes. This scheme addresses the need to renovate agricultural practices.
